U.S. Retail Survey Results

A U.S. survey of pet product sales has shown across the board increases with food sales rising from $1.4 billion in 1999 to $1.9 billion last year.

Independent U.S. pet retailers recorded roughly $5.7 billion in overall sales compared to $4.4 billion during 1999, according to the 28th annual Pet Product News Buying Guide directory's State of the Industry Report.

Sales of dog products rose from $889 million to a record $1.37 billion in 2000. Cat products increased from $511.8 million to $748 million.

The survey broke food sales down into species categories. Dog food sales rose from $371.4 million to $568.2 million at the retail level and cat food increased from $233.1 million to $331.9 million.

Small mammal diets saw increases from $112.8 million to $169 million and bird diets went from US318.1 million to $4379.2 million in 2000.
