Breakthrough In Equine Strangles
One year after the announcement of the launch of an initiative to fight the most contagious equine disease in the world, the Animal Health Trust, (AHT) has developed a blood test that identifies horses that have recently been exposed to Strangles.
The development is being hailed as a big breakthrough which is expected to lead to a significant drop in outbreaks of the disease.
Peter Webbon, Chief Executive, AHT, said:
"Our research scientists have a particular interest in the diagnosis and prevention of Strangles and the development of this diagnostic test is a major milestone. Huge thanks go to all of those who have supported the campaign."
Strangles is the most commonly diagnosed infectious horse disease around the world, and can prove fatal. Symptoms include fever, profuse nasal discharge and abscessed lymph nodes of the head and neck.
The disease gets its 'Strangle' name from the swelling of the lymph nodes which in severe cases, restrict the airway.
The blood test has been available from the beginning of this month for screening horses prior to movement, competition or sales.
Compulsory Microchipping Of Horses
Meanwhile.. EU Member States have agreed new regulation that will require the compulsory microchipping of foals born after 1st July 2009.
Microchips provide a link between a horse and its passport and may also prove useful for disease control and for the recovery of lost or stolen horses.
Defra says it will be consulting with the horse industry over the implementation of the new requirements.
